Running blind

A short Friday analogy…

A few months back I went for a morning run on the beach during my holidays (belgian beaches, nothing too be overly enthusiastic about). Arriving at that sweet spot where you can hear the waves and the sand is hard (makes for easier running), I try to control my breathing. Once that is down, my mind can start to wonder…

How far can I run without looking? An easy question and one I could test instantly. 10 sec? 30sec?

With nothing as far as the eye could see (sea left, 100m empty beach right, +200m straight ahead), I had the perfect environment.

First attempt: 5 sec

Alright, I got to focus a bit more on that 20-50m of terrain (bumps, waterpools, shells), feel my legs, control that breathing and don’t get ‘shaken out’ by a minor sand bump or some cracking shells.

Second attempt: 20 sec

Damn long. I see nothing really changed, the fear of hitting something just grew too large.

Last attempt: 60 sec

Just keep pushing. What a strange yet very enlightening feeling. I can do this.

Analogy to investing; How long can I comfortably hold my positions without exterior guidance/help? (read: without social media or newsletter writer updates?)

Do you know “what’s coming 1 month, 6 months down the road? What are your expectations & reactions to bumps of any kind (commodity prices, political risk, assays or permits delayed, cheap financing)? Can you understand the implications of expected news releases? Etc.

Trial and error my friend, trial and error

Cheers, Pete
